50th Anniversary Year Events

April 15, 2008 marked the 50 year anniversary of the first lighting ordinance ever enacted. It restricted searchlight advertisements from sweeping the night skies above Flagstaff. To celebrate, we invite you to join us for these outstanding special events.

INDEPENDENCE DAY PARADE
Time: 10:00 AM - 12:00 NOON
Location: Downtown Flagstaff
Personnel: The Flagstaff Dark Sky Coalition ("Dark Sky Percussion" marching-group pending)
Description: Join your fellow Coalition members as we march through the streets of Flagstaff. Help hold a banner, pass out Anniversary Year activity flyers, or paste stick-em stars on foreheads of audience watching the parade.

EVENING LECTURE / ACTIVITY AT MNA
Time: 7:00 PM
Location: Museum of Northern Arizona
Personnel: Dr. Larry Stevens, MNA Curator of Ecology and Conservation.
Description: Dr. Stevens will introduce nocturnal creatures from the Flagstaff area. After lecture, an outdoor excursion using ultra-violet light to locate some of our peculiar and secretive neighbors.

Description: A quintet of Symphony musicians will perform several works of night-themed music at this summer evening musical event sponsored by William Lowell and Kathryne Putnam.

MOONLIT BIKE RIDE IN FLAGSTAFF NATIONAL MONUMENTS
Time: 5:00 - 9:00 PM
Location: Sunset Crater to Wupatki National Monuments. Meet at the Painted Desert Overlook, which is just south of the Loop Road about five miles from the Sunset Crater visitors center.
Personnel: FDSC Cycling Activist Elson Miles and additional National Park Service Rangers
Description: Join a small group of cyclists for a spectacular sunset bike ride from Sunset Crater to Wukoki ruin in Wupatki National Monument. This 14 mile ride is almost entirely down hill. Transport will be provided back to the departure-point.
Mid-ride refreshments and remarks by National Park Service personnel on the nighttime world of these nationally-protected areas right in our own backyard.

Start Time: 8 p.m.
Location: Buffalo Park. Meet at the Buffalo.
Description: Easy, flat hike around the park followed by telescope
viewing (weather-permitting). Bring a flashlight. Telescopes will be set up for viewing at the end of the walk.

Description: The Arboretum closes out its 2008 Summer Concert Series with an evening performance by Austin folksinger/songwriter Terri Hendrix in the Arboretum gardens. Terri has written a song about dark skies, and her 5:00 - 7:00 PM concert will be followed by star-gazing with and without telescopes on adjacent Arboretum grounds from 7:30 - 9:00 PM.
